The hour lines have been corrected for both longitude and the equation of time. The sundial indicates the clock time:
blue lines before noon, the red lines after noon. The green line (lowest) is the transit time (local noon).

Reading the time: The gnomon, attached to a movable top, and is set over the vertical line of the date. Then the cylinder is turned until the shadow is vertical and over the line. Read the time using the hour lines.
